[Activity] Chairman Choi Jai-chul Highlights Global Climate Transition Driven by Local Government Solidarity and Innovation at VISION 2035 Climate Transformation Forum > 게시글

On July 24, Chairman Jai-chul Choi of the Climate Change Center delivered a welcome address at the “Vision 2035! Climate Transformation Forum” held at the Suwon Convention Center. The forum, hosted by the Local Governments Council for Climate and Energy Transition, marked the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement and was convened to present local government–led strategies for climate transition and a forward-looking vision for the next decade.

In his remarks, Chairman Choi underscored that solidarity among local governments and innovative climate initiatives can drive transformation at a global scale. He further emphasized that, in light of the Paris Agreement’s 10th anniversary, the forum served as a platform for local governments to demonstrate leadership and responsibility in responding to the climate crisis. He noted, “Local governments, as the actors closest to citizens, face the direct impacts of the climate crisis and are therefore essential to ensuring the effectiveness of climate policies.” He also highlighted that the experiences and practices of local governments resonate with both national strategies and international efforts for transition.

Chairman Choi reaffirmed that the Climate Change Center, as the Secretariat of the Council since 2022, will continue to play a pivotal role in supporting policy implementation at the local level and in connecting domestic and international networks for cooperation.

The Local Governments Council for Climate and Energy Transition, established in 2016, is a policy cooperation body composed of more than 30 municipalities across Korea. Since assuming the role of Secretariat in 2022, the Climate Change Center has supported region-based climate and energy policy implementation and advanced various collaborative initiatives. This forum served as a milestone to showcase the Council’s achievements and to declare a new decade of strengthened climate leadership by local governments.
